West Palm Beach, also known as West Palm, is the largest city in Palm Beach County, Florida. The city is also the oldest incorporated municipality in South Florida. According to the 2010 Census records the city had just under 100,000 residents. It is the county seat of Palm Beach County and is one of the principal cities of the South Florida area which has about 5.5 million residents. The area is also known as the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Boynton Beach Metro Division, which covers the entire county. The location is the northermost county of what is considered South Florida.
The city was founded by the famous Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants working in the two grand hotels on the neighboringisland of Palm Beach across lake Worth. The original spelling was "Westpalmbeach", but it was feared that the 13-letter word would be to ominous omen for the fledgling community.
